Despite the fact that people believe that age might be tied to breast reconstruction complication, older women don’t have more complications than younger ones. A new study showed just the opposite. Researchers found that women who are older might have better physical, psychosocial, and sexual wellbeing compared to young women.
The study showed that women, no matter the age feel better, more confident after having breast reconstruction surgery. In this procedure, doctors use a woman’s own tissues in order to reconstruct the breast. Many women undergo this surgery after they suffered from breast cancer.
Until now women believed that if they were older than 45 they can’t have this type of surgery because they might have complications after doing it. This study came to contradict those beliefs assuring older women that they have the same risks as younger women when it comes to breast reconstruction complications.
In order to show that older women don’t have more risks to having complications after reconstructive surgery, the researchers analyzed data from 1,531 women who underwent reconstruction surgery from 2012 to 2014. They split these women into 3 groups based on their age. The first group was formed by women who were younger than 45. The second group had women with ages between 45 and 60. The last group was formed from women that were over 60 years old.
The researchers then started to look at these women’s files to see if they had any breast reconstruction complications. They found that on the long run all women, no matter the age had the same risks of complications. This study showed that women over 60 shouldn’t be afraid to have reconstruction surgery because they don’t have higher risks than younger women.
Previous studies focused on the effects that happen 30 days after reconstructive surgery which is not as relevant because women want to see if they have risks on the long run not only in the first month. The study also showed that older women tend to have better physical and psychosocial wellbeing after they had an autologous procedure (doctors used the women’s own tissue). When it comes to an implant procedure all women had similar risks and physical wellbeing.
What is your opinion about this study? Do you think that older women have more risks?
