This month there has been two notable new entrants into the social networking scene – One is the social site for the high and the elite –Netropolitan and the other is the social-networking site Ello which has gate crashed into the scene and some are calling it the “the Facebook killer.” However, how much successful will it be is anyone’s guess.
So Ello goes into a launch and proclaims that it is one of the high brows with lofty ideals-‘You are not a product’. It even asks its users to agree or disagree with the world view.
Ello Manifesto goes like this
Every post you share, every friend you make and every link you follow is tracked, recorded and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold.
We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership.
We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce and manipulate—but a place to connect, create and celebrate life.
Now there are no prizes for guessing who Ello is pointing at- Facebook which is making loads of money by treating its users as a commodity. It is the money which is causing all the heartburns and makes sites like Ello enter the scene to play spoil sport. If you are earning because of a great idea which has formed in your brain, I am here to poke your wheels of fortune.
Ello says that its site is different, yes it is for the umpteenth time I am hearing it. Ello is trying to cash in the feeling uneasiness surrounding Facebook as a place, but also the seething antipathy about Facebook’s revenue generating practices.
Ello is promising no ads, and that it won’t treat you like a commodity. If the site is for profit, it will treat you like a commodity maybe in a way we never have seen or experienced till now.
