New York City witnessed a perilous cargo train that derailed on Tuesday. The cause of the accident was a work vehicle that got stuck on the tracks just before the train arrived. The vehicle belonged to an employee at a steel company and it was resting across Water Street, Newburgh. However, the good news is that authorities noticed no leaks coming from the cargo, which means that they were protected by a quality structure.
At around 3:15 p.m. last Tuesday, a 77-car train that was carrying perilous cargo hit a vehicle and derailed. The car belonged to the Steelways Inc. and was just driving the lift across Water Street when the train came in full speed. There were no casualties or any major incidents after the event. Two CSX employees that worked in maintenance were urgently transported to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. However, doctors confirmed that they were in no life-threatening danger.
CSX mitigated the accident by sending environmental and hazardous materials specialists at the location. A spokesman for the company, Rob Doolittle, wrote in an email that they had to manage the diesel fuel spill that came from three locomotives. According to this statement, there were a total of 20 railroad cars that derailed. Only seven of them carried perilous cargo such as sodium hydroxide, aqueous bisulfites, and sulfuric acid.
The train was scheduled to cover the distance between Selkirk, New York to Waycross, Georgia. The rest of 57 railroad cars remained on tracks and the accident didn’t impact them in any way. Even though the circumstances of the event were to certain extent clear, the authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident. The derailment took place at about 600 miles north of New York City.
The officials decided to detour the traffic which caused massive rush hours in the City of Newburgh and along the Route 9W near New Windsor. Nonetheless, this was the only way for specialists to carry on their work without interruption and clear the sight as soon as possible. The area can remain closed for as long as two days and even longer than this. The police started investigating the case for any traces of criminal intent. Both the Federal Railroad Administration and CSX probe the cause.
