The Earth was a big ball of fire for a considerable part of its existence as per the conventional theories. However new evidence gleaned from zircon crystals state that the conditions on Earth in the past were much similar to what they are today.
The earth at its birth was a hellish place with a giant ocean of magma on its nonexistent solid surface. This is the general belief of conventional geologists. However a study into the Zircon crystals has revealed that the Earth was not a fiery hell at all but was much like our present day Earth.
Zircon crystals are minerals typically associated with granite and are almost 4 billion years old, preserved in younger sandstones. Zircon crystals are important because they help geologists know a bit more about the Earth’s earliest crust. It also reveals that the early Earth didn’t have a magma ocean, but had a solid crust and water. Scientists have always debated about how the Earth looked billions of years ago and how much similarity is there with the Earth of today.
There are two thoughts of school today- One school of thought feels that the Earth in the past was not a fiery hell but the conditions were much similar to the present day earth. . The other argued that while Earth wasn’t a fiery hell as once believed, it was still a foreign and hostile place.
Therefore the researchers decided to look more closely into the Hadean period a bit more closely and also study the Zircon crystals which contained the answers to these questions.
Calvin Miller, one of the researchers, in a news release said, “We reasoned that the only concrete evidence for what the Hadean was like came from the only known survivors: zircon crystals-and yet no one had investigated Icelandic zircon to compare their telltale compositions to those that are more than 4 billion years old, or with zircon from other modern environments.”
In other words, Hadean Earth was not a fiery hell but lot more like modern Earth than previously thought.
