Ford has just signed a contract with Stratasys Ltd. which is a company of 3D printers. Their technology is already used by all kinds of engineers who create low-cost products such as ABS, polycarbonate, and polyphenyl sulfone. The 3D production organization is not at its first time when it comes to an automotive brand. The company has also finished projects within the aerospace, electronic, recreational, industrial, and medical industries.
As a result of this collaboration, the automaker received access to the Infinite Build 3D. The tool is actually as spacious as a factory room, and it has the capacity to make Ford’s dream come true. However, the company is currently precocious with the 3D printing technology. At the moment, they are just testing the limits of the product and deciding how to integrate the printer into their usual production routine.
The most happy beneficiaries of this innovative project will be those consumers who want to buy a low-volume model such as Ford Performance. As these products are produced in smaller batches, they are more expensive than usual. The production is not as cost-effective as it should be, as it has to create a small number of dedicated components at a time. However, 3D printing technology can fix this issue. The company can produce durable plastic parts for its lines of cars with lower expenses. Moreover, the new models will be lighter than their current equivalents which can lead to better performance.
While this project can take years to come true, the automaker will not overlook the possibility of satisfying other demands on the run. One of these is a cost effective possibility of unique customization. Since clients want to distinguish themselves apart from the others, some of them are willing to spend a large sum of money for a special look for their vehicles. At the moment, these visual upgrades can be made only in an aftermarket workshop. Thus, prices are high. However, a 3D printer will be able to create unique personalization concepts right from the factory.
