Facebook is still the number one social media platform in the United States, according to a report released on Friday. More than half of American adults, more precisely 58% of them, have a Facebook account.
The study looked only at adult Americans who are internet users and revealed that more than 81% of adult American people use the internet. The report shows that three quarters of the ones who go online have a Facebook account. The survey revealing that 58% of adult Americans have Facebook was conducted by the Pew Research Center.
Nicole Ellison is a professor of information science at the University of Michigan and has been studying Facebook for the last ten years. She said that Facebok is the baseline of online interaction among adults in the United States.
Ellison helped design the new study and said that most people who are waiting in line at a post office are on their phones checking the newsfeed of their Facebook account. She added that Facebook has become a sort of daily practice for many Americans. It’s the most used social media site in the United States.
The study reveals that the number of adult Americans who use Facebook has not increased since 2013, but the amount of time spent on the site has. The study shows that 70% of the users visit Facebook daily and 45% of them access it many times a day. This went up from the 63% that was last year.
Recently, Facebook has started to become popular among older Americans. This year more than half of adults who use the internet and are over 65 years old have a Facebook account and use it frequently.
The older Facebook users are encouraged by their children to create an account and socialize with others. Ellison said that one of the reasons older Americans get into Facebook is to see photos of their grandchildren. Once they create the account, they will start looking for old friends, school mates and work colleagues.
Ellison says that social media activity in older citizens can alleviate loneliness and create social support.
