Amazon.com has released its diversity report and just like other techno giants Apple and Google, the story is the same here. The majority of the work force and also the top echelons of the company are dominated by males.
The Amazon diversity report reveals that 63% of its employees worldwide are males. The ethnic composition of the workforce in US is as follows-
- 60 % are white
- 15 %are black,
- 13 % are Asians,
- 9 % are Hispanic
- 3 % accounts for the rest
In the top managerial cadre also whites dominate
- Whites at 71 %
- Asian managers at 18 %
- Black and Hispanic managers 4 %
- Other races total 3 %.
The diversity of Amazon was compared with its arch rival eBay by Wall Street Journal and the figures wer4e not very different. Here also 58 percent of employees are males, and 75 percent of managers are male.
Amazon unlike other companies has not made any promise to correct this anomaly in diversity and gender. The report did not talk much about diversity but were more focused on the efforts made by the company to improve its diversity such as the Affinity Group and Amazon Women in Engineering (AWE).
Amazon Affinity Group is an effort to collate ideas from employees so that the company can improve its diversity efforts and career developments. AWE on the other hand strives to attract woman engineers by making the workplace more attractive for the fairer sex. The group also runs a mentorship program for female employees and interns.
