In order to obtain such a design, Apple decided to get rid of key features such as full USB ports and the SD card slot. But not to worry, the company came with an alternative: an all-in-one port.
It also reduced the size of the keyboard, making it edge-to-edge in order to create a narrower computer profile. The trackpad was also suffered modifications, the company deciding to make it thinner.
“Standard” MacBook Airs feature the MagSafe charging port, a USB port and a headphone port that, of course, will remain on the newer models. The ports measure a few millimeters in thickness, as much as the laptop’s width in fact. So even the current laptop models are as thin as they can get.
However, if the company switches to the USB Type C technology it will be able to further reduce the width of future models. This much thinner type of USB is capable of replacing all other ports.
As it can be used to recharge the computer, MagSafe chargers will become unnecessary. The type-C USB can also power a display and is much faster than the “standard” USB technology thus the possibility of being used instead of Apple’s Thunderbolt ports.
Another great thing about these all-in-one miracles is that they are reversible. It won’t matter anymore which side you use.
And yes, it’s a better technology on an even smaller scale. The plug’s size can be compared to the power plugs used to charge “non-Apple” smartphones. They are, however, slightly larger than the Lightning port.
This new USB technology was released last year but has been weakly adopted. The reversible alternative has been around since 2012 when Apple released the iPhone and iPad with its reversible Lightning connector.
In spite of some important advantages, some governments together with the European Union decided that the standard for charging and connecting should be the micro-USB, although it is larger, less powerful and slower than a Type C USB.
This new all-in-one feature does have it downside. Firstly, the option of connecting the computer to two devices will no longer be possible. For example, you will have to choose between charging your laptop and connecting it to the printer. Furthermore, the user will need to buy adapters for all the incompatible USB plugs.
The new MacBook model is expected to be released before mid-2015.
