People who haven’t had a year to remember might be psychologicaly affected by Facebook’s Year in Review as the brain might be visually reminded of traumatic or tragic memories.
For the end of the year, Facebook has gathered every users data in a sort of scrapbook of visual memories and presents it to each persons timeline. So basically all this years memories, good or bad will be given the change to be briefly relived. Facebook is making this option available and ready for the users to post on their newsfeed and share it with friends. Looking at it widely, this doesn’t seem such a bad idea.
Some users might have chosen not to opt for the Year in Review feature, yet they are still repeatedly asked to opt for this feature. Even though this should remain purely optional.
The mechanism of the site, uses an algorithm which picks photographs from the user’s timeline, but it can be also customised by users. Anyhow, the critics of Facebook have found a great fault at this Year in Review, from a psychological point of view. They are calling it an “indavertent algorithmic cruelty.” The one who came up with this term is Eric Meyer, an advocate for web developments as such. He claims that he had a traumatising experience with Facebook’s, Year in Review which made him review pictures of his daughter Rebecca, who had died this year.
“I didn’t go looking for grief this afternoon, but it found me anyway, and I have designers and programmers to thank for it.”Mr.Meyer wrote on his blog
According to his sayings he has nothing against the feature, but with the fact that it can’t be stopped from showing up and to just opt it out from the start. He claims that he had avoided every time to look at the album but eventually Facebook continued to promote the feature until the main picture of the add was the one of his lost daughter. He believes that this feature being based on a plain algorithm can highly impact the mental state of those who have gone trough tragedies this year. On the other hand, it can be a great reminder for those who have had amazing times and gathered happy memories with friends trough out the year.Image Source: Gadgets Ndtv
