It was a move which would not be relished by many but was inevitable. Reddit has banned subreddit through which the now infamous Fappening images were leaked last week. 4Chan, the original site from where the images were leaked has decided to introduce a DMCA policy which will help to cope with copyright material. The move will not stop the flow of image sharing nor will it be very popular.
Reddit administrator alienth has posted a lengthy statement explaining the reasons behind the decision.
“A very shitty thing happened this past Sunday. A number of very private and personal photos were stolen and spread across the internet. The fact that these photos belonged to celebrities increased the interest in them by orders of magnitude, but that in no way means they were any less harmful or deplorable. If the same thing had happened to anyone you hold dear, it’d make you sick to your stomach with grief and anger”.
Why it took Reddit a full week to respond to the issue is beyond anyone’s understanding. However the statement hints at the problems in hand. Firstly the amount of traffic was stupendous and was breaking the site in many ways. Reddit was already getting DMCA and takedown notices by the owners of these photos. Thirdly Reddit was fearing a backlash if it removed these contents from the site citing technical, legal, or ethical obligations and the pictures will be posted again and again making the very exercise futile.
