Until now, it was believed that full-fat dairy products are harmful, affecting the cardiovascular system. However, a new study shows that products such as cheese and yogurt are not responsible for heart problems, not increasing the risk of stroke or heart attack, as it was previously believed. This new study was published in the European Journal of Epidemiology.
Full-Fat Dairy Products Have a Neutral Effect on the Heart
The research is an analysis of more than 28 previous studies. Researchers looked for a link between full-fat dairy products and the risk of developing heart problems. The findings showed that these foods have a neutral effect on the cardiovascular system. This means they don’t decrease or increase the risk of severe heart problems like heart attacks.
“..there were no associations between total dairy, high- and low-fat dairy, milk and the health outcomes including all-cause mortality, coronary heart disease or cardiovascular disease,” stated the report
To conduct this research three teams of researchers from 3 different countries gathered their forces. One team was from Denmark, another from Netherlands, and the last one from England. They mentioned they were driven by the common misconception that dairy products, especially the tastier full-fat ones are dangerous for our health.
Some of the companies that produce low-fat dairy products also influenced the way people perceived full-fat cheese and milk. Their ads showed that individuals who ate low-fat cheese were skinnier and healthier. Even the current health guidelines state that people should avoid full-fat dairy products because they have too much salt and fat.
Researchers mentioned that their study shows no connection between heart problems and dairy products. No matter if it is full-fat or low-fat, dairy products should be consumed on a regular basis as they provide proteins, calcium, and other necessary nutrients to the body.
All in all, consumed in small quantities on a regular basis, full-fat dairy products don’t increase the risk of heart problems. On the contrary, they can even be great for our health. Seeing as the research was based on a wide sample of individuals from different countries, the results of the study are considered reliable in the scientific community.
