There is smart watch, smartphone and now a Smart Car which can talk to one another and drive themselves at freeway speeds. The wait is not long, just 2 years from the showroom according to General Motors executives.
GM motors announced on Sunday its unidentified new 2017 Cadillac that goes on sale in the summer of 2016 will have a semi autonomous system for freeways. It will boast radio transmitters and receivers which will enable it to communicate with other cars, sharing data such as location, speed and if the driver is applying the brakes.
GM Motors made the announcements at the unveiling of the Intelligent Transportation Society World Congress which is being held in Detroit. This is the first of a series of announcement which will be made by a whole array of industry big Whigs who will show off progress toward self-driving and safer cars.
The freeway system has been dubbed a ‘Super Cruise’. The cameras and the radar will serve as the eyes of the smart car and will keep it at the centre of the road as well as maintaining a safe distance from the car in the front. The car can stop if the traffic halts in its front. The car will keep going in stop and go traffic without any assistance from the driver.
Mercedes-Benz offers similar systems that work at low speeds. However it is for the first time an automobile maker will introduce a smart car which could work at highway speeds.
CEO Mary Barra said in remarks prepared for the conference’s keynote address on Sunday, “If the mood strikes you on the high-speed road from Barstow, California, to Las Vegas, you can take a break from the wheel and pedals and let the car do the work.”
However GM said that the car cannot drive by itself and the company is perfecting a system which will monitor the drivers to check if they are alert and paying attention. GM made it very clear that there is a limit to automation and the human component cannot be completely removed. At least it is not possible at present.
