The Governor was on a holiday family trip in Africa when he got thrown off a horse while riding it.
Brian Coy, the Governor’s spokesman said that McAuliffe will spend the night at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center and must recover for at least three days.
At first, the doctors expected the broken ribs would heal on their own, but after further medical monitoring, the doctors noticed there was increased fluid around the Governor’s lungs. The Governor is being held under observation until the doctors drain all the fluid.
Governor McAuliffe and his family were on a holiday trip to Africa to visit the Governor’s daughter who is doing voluntary work there, when he tossed off a horse while in the middle of a riding session. The Governor was in Tanzania when the accident happened. It appears that the horse may have been startled by something before throwing the Governor off its back. McAuliffe spokesman said that he does not know what scared the horse.
Coy said in his official statement that the Governor has kept working since he had the accident and has delivered his State of the Commonwealth address, while on Monday he was on a visit to Norfolk. There he attended the Urban League’s 31st annual Community Leader’s Breakfast where he seemed fine.
Coy said that the Governor is still doing his job even if he is still not fully recovered after the accident.
“While the injury did not impair his ability to do his job and his doctors expected the injury to heal on its own, today they identified increased fluid around his lungs that will require a procedure to remove. He is being admitted today and is expected to be back in action after 2-3 days of recovery”
, Coy said in his official statement.
William J. Howell, House Speaker of Virginia, said in a statement that he wishes the Governor a rapid recovery.
