There is the possibility of a soggy Christmas this year, as weather channels predict strong chances of rain. Other great things to look forward to this holiday are winds, thunderstorms and rain. Looks like we’re in for an early but rainy spring…
According to the American Automobile Association 98.6 million Americans will travel a distance of 50 mile or more to reach their loved ones this Christmas.
Many Millions of Americans might have to modify their holiday plans as these weather conditions could “disrupt travel at airports in the East “stated Roy Lucksinger, lead meteorologist at The Weather Channel. According to National Weather Service aviation forecasters, New York City airports might be facing important flight delays in the event of a “major impact event” such as heavy rainfall or gusts of wind on Christmas Eve.
Brian Hurley, Weather Prediction Center meteorologist stated for USA Today that during holiday season, any kind of weather disruptions are a cause for concern as it could affect an important number of airports. He adds that the chances of snow in the next few days are minimal.
Christmas Eve won’t even be close to “the ideal travel day” according to Dan Pydynowski AccuWeather senior meteorologist. He added that heavy wind is expected on Dec. 24, possibly creating some delays and complicated traffic.
Other airports that might be affected are the ones in Charlotte, Atlanta and Florida where it’s expected to rain the next couple of days.
National Weather Service in Tallahassee is talking about “a half-foot or more of rain” in the next few days due to a combination between “a strong low-pressure system” and an important level of moisture coming from the Gulf. There is also the possibility of floods and isolated tornadoes but the risk for such severe weather is minimal. Kati Moore, meteorologist for the Weather Service stated that the most exposed region in Florida will be Tallahassee.
Florida can expect storms to disappear by Christmas when sunny skies will once again take over. Maximums will reach close to 60 degrees, dropping in the evening to about 30.
Unfortunately these storms are not a sign for future snow. The only states that might get lucky are Wisconsin and northern Michigan. There is a chance of light snow falling on the first day of Christmas in the eastern parts of the Great Lakes area and in the mountainous regions of West Virginia. In New England, there is a chance for morning rain to change to light snow but the rest of the Northeast will experience strong winds.
