Who doesn’t want an exercise drug that can make him or her turn into a marathon runner? Researchers developed a new drug that can considerably improve physical skills. Presently, they have only tested its effects on mice. Nevertheless, these trials showed promise as the animals responded great to the experiment. The mice were able to run 100 minutes longer than before.
Scientists Presented The First Results Of The Exercise Drug
Despite the fact that it has only been tested in the lab, scientists believe that it has a real potential of becoming an exercise drug for humans. The name of the compound is GW1516. This substance can be modified and turned into a drug for people who are unable to exercise. Those affected by obesity or people who have a heart problem may soon be able to run thanks to this compound.
Researchers had already observed that activating the gene PPAR delta can have the same effects as exercising. Previous studies noted that mice had a great response when they were genetically engineered to activate their PPAR delta gene. Despite this, people can’t be engineered to run better or to swim faster.
This is why scientists decided to activate the gene in another way. They created this GW compound to activate the PPAR delta. The mice were injected over eight weeks, which in turn helped activate this gene. They started acting just like their genetically engineered peers. Researchers published their study results in the journal Cell Metabolism
The research team picked only sedentary mice for this experiment. Also, they split them into 2 groups: the control group and the experimental one. To test the animals, the researchers made them run until they were exhausted. Scientists used blood sugar levels as exhaustion parameters.
Before the experiment, the mice were able to run for 160 minutes. After being injected with the exercise drug, the experimental group specimens were able to run for over 270 minutes without becoming exhausted. Also, the genes that break fat for energy worked a lot less for the mice in the control group. The injected experimental group also presented several benefits, singular only to them.
More Research Is Still Needed
Despite the fact that it shows potential, the researchers state that they have to further test this new compound before proceeding to human trials. Still, it could be a game changer for people unable to exercise.
