One of the main promises Donald Trump made to Americans was to build them a wall if they vote for him. The construction would work as a way to impair Mexicans from crossing the border to the United States. On top of that, Trump was sure that Mexico would pay for their own prison. With just a few months after the elections, Rep. Paul Ryan seems ready to start off project border wall.
House Speaker Paul Ryan Featured in a Video Promoting the Construction of the Border Wall
On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security announced plans to start working on its promised wall and additional access roads at the border. However, to achieve these goals, the department exempted itself from the obligation to apply certain measures that would protect the environment as the law orders. Nonetheless, there are other more pressing issues that might discourage construction. It turns out that there are no funds for such a mission.
Moreover, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan visited the border with Mexico to take the pulse of the situation personally. On top of that, he featured in a campaign video which had the goal to announce the first measures for building the wall.
There Are Yet No Solid Financial Sources to Support Such a Project
On the one hand, Republicans have to respect their campaign promise. Otherwise, Democrats will have enough artillery to attack the house that holds the reins of power. On the other hand, there are not enough funds to cover such a huge project. Few members of the Congress are on board with letting taxpayers take care of this one as well. If Congress itself pays from its own pocket, it will trigger sharp deficit.
Despite these challenges, last week the House voted in favor of a budget of $1.6 billion redirected towards Trump’s border wall. However, this sum of money is not enough to support the project valued at $25 billion. On top of that, House Republicans seemed to vote for it only because there are few chances for the proposal to pass the Senate.
