New born jaundice happens when a baby suffers from high bilirubin levels in the blood. Bilirubin is a byproduct which is formed when old and worn out RBC are destroyed. The Bilirubin is removed by the liver via stool.
High levels of Bilirubin in the body will make the skin and the white of the eyes look yellow. This state is known as Jaundice. It is normal for the baby’s bilirubin to be a bit on the higher side at birth.
A baby in the mother’s womb obtains its nutrition via the placenta. The placenta also removes the bilirubin which is formed in the baby’s body. After birth the liver of the baby starts working. However it could take some time before the Liver starts to function in its full capacity.
A majority of new borns have yellowing of skin or jaundice. It is also known as “physiological jaundice.”It is noticed when the baby is 2 – 4 days old. Most of the time it does not cause any problem and the symptoms disappear when the baby is 2 weeks old.
Researchers have recently created a new Smartphone app which will help in screening the neonates for jaundice. The condition often gets unnoticed for long in neonates. The app named “Bilicam” was tested on Wednesday, and observation showed that it is working well.
It will also be beneficial for parents to check for any signs of Jaundice in their kids at home. The parents need only to take the child for confirmatory test if they test positive with the app mat home.
The development team would be showcasing this project and the results obtained from the tests on humans next month, at the International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing at Seattle.
This app functions by checking signs for the yellow skin coloration of the neonates which is the most common symptom of this disease.
