In a recent interview, Stephen Hawking warns about artificial intelligence and how building machines capable of thinking may doom our existence. Even though Stephen Hawking counts on an intelligent system to allow him to communicate, the famous scientist has fears about how this technology could affect mankind.
Stephen Hawking’s remarks came as an answer to a question concerning an update to the technology that allows him to communicate which features a form of artificial intelligence.
The famous theoretical physicist suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease, an Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis which forces him to use a system that allows him to speak. The current system Stephen Hawking uses has been developed by the British company Swiftkey and Intel. The application which makes use of Stephen Hawking’s widely known robotic voice is capable of learning how the physicist thinks and may even suggest words that Stephen Hawking is capable of using next.
Even if Stephen Hawking does not reject the various advantages being offered by artificial intelligence he believes that further advancements of the system may bring a negative result on the human race. Despite this, Hawking believes the crude form of artificial intelligence has proven very useful.
“It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate. Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete, and would be superseded.”
Stephen Hawking said.
This is not even the first time Stephen Hawking warns about artificial intelligence. In May, Stephen Hawking mentioned various effects of the progress of artificial intelligence and indicated what kind of negative impacts those may create.
“One can imagine such technology outsmarting financial markets, out-inventing human researchers, out-manipulating human leaders, and developing weapons we cannot even understand. Whereas the short-term impact of AI depends on who controls it, the long-term impact depends on whether it can be controlled at all.”
But Stephen Hawking isn’t the only one concerned about the advancements of artificial intelligence. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX caught attention last month for a comment posted and later deleted on a website revealing his worries about the advancement of the artificial intelligence technology, which he believes could possibly bring mankind to an end in the not too distant future.
