Super Bowl Sunday falls on the last Sunday of January or first Sunday of February when the final football match is played that decides the best team in the U.S. Millions of Americans watch the game and it appears that Super Bowl Sunday is the day when the most pizza is eat, when compared to any other day of the year.
It was estimated by a food-industry council that people tend to consume a whopping 2,400 calories when watching a football game. Keep in mind that the average person should consume around 2,000 calories a day in order to keep their BMI stable and healthy. Just to get an idea of how much 2,400 calories are, you should know that a banana is around 100 calories, while a 3.5 oz piece of grilled chicken is 172 calories; one light beer has around 150 calories.
Researchers from Cornell University have concluded that Super Bowl Sunday is the unhealthiest day of the year, as people buy the most and the least healthy food in the week that precedes Super Bowl Sunday. Thanksgiving falls right behind, because even if more calories are consumed on Thanksgiving, the food is generally of better quality than the one eaten on Super Bowl Sunday.
David Just, professor of Behavioral Economics, revealed that:
The higher number represents the fact that the household was buying foods that give more calories each time they eat a recommended serving. This means people buy the highest calorie foods around the Super Bowl.
Every Super Bowl Sunday more than 112 million Americans will watch the football match. The vast majority of these consume unhealthy foods, such as junk foods during the match and halftime breaks. Binge eating redirects the stress felt during matches by football enthusiasts.
To prevent binge eating during high-stress situations, such as the Super Bowl Sunday match, health experts recommend that people nibble on fruits and vegetables instead of chips and other unhealthy foods. Tahini or hummus dips are nutritious, delicious and also very healthy and nutritionists recommend that people consume these instead of cheese dips.
