Have you ever wondered what was the prime stress cause of the American adults? Surveys have shown that the correct answer to the question would be money problems.
Studies have shown that the number one stress factor for American adults, ranking higher than work issues, health problems and family obligations was money. Also, the individuals who have claimed high levels of anxiety when it comes to money, were more predisposed to unhealthy life style habits that would help them deal with the stress better, such binge tv watching, smoking or drinking, staying up late, surfing the internet.
The results were shown by an experiment done by The American Psychological Association, who commissioned a survey of over 3,000 adults from the United States, in the month of August 2104. According to the survey, around 72% of Americans had been under stress about money along the previous month, out of which 22% went under extreme stress regarding money. A percentage of 26% said that they were stressed about their economic status almost all the time, while 54% said their money lasted them just enough or not enough, to make ends meet at the end of each month.
Overall, money seemed to be an important source of stress and around 64% of Americans declared going trough it every month. The percentage went a bit higher, when it came to parents with children under the age of 18 out of which 77% struggled with lack of money stress, Generation X people, which were 76% and milennials out of which, 75% declared they were stressing about money
Another point of the study indicated the fact that Americans living in households with an annual income of under $50,000 were living higher levels of stress that the ones living in households, with an income over $50,000 a year.
Appart from money, other stress factors were still related to this field. Up to 60% of the Americans admitted that work was a serious source of stress, 49% stated that the economy was stressing them while 47% were challenged by family responsibilities and 46% were stressed about health issues.
Constant stress can have serious effects on the well being of our health. Around 75% of Americans said that stress has caused them at least one health problem during the previous month, with symptoms like irritability, anger, anxiety, lack of motivation, feeling overwhelmed and depressed. About one out five from the pole participants, stated that they avoided or tried to avoid going to the doctor when they had health problems, because of their financial situation.
